TOWN PROFILE

The area now known as Roswell, New Mexico, was originally inhabited by the Mescalero Apache and later settled by Anglo pioneers after the Civil War. In 1869, businessman Van C. Smith established the first settlement and named it after his father, Roswell Smith. The town’s growth accelerated with the establishment of a post office in 1877 and its incorporation in 1891.

Roswell’s early economy was rooted in ranching and agriculture, bolstered by irrigation projects that supported farming. The city gained further prominence with the opening of Walker Air Force Base in 1941, which contributed significantly to population and economic growth. Over time, Roswell became widely known for its cultural legacy, particularly the 1947 UFO incident, and it has since evolved into a unique hub for tourism, aviation, and agriculture. This strong historical foundation continues to support Roswell’s growth and long-term stability.
